Yes, that D700 was just a fake
Remember this Nikon D700 photo that got everyone excited?
Well, NikonD700.com reports that to have been a cleverly (might I add extremely and cleverly) done photo-editing job that transformed a Nikon D300 into the rumored D700.
I expect these faking jobs to get better and better with future releases.
Was I ever fooled.
